EMERY (Dodecanese, Greece)

Emery began operations as a maker of spirits in 1923 taking its name from a Grand Master of the Knights of St John at Rhodes at the beginning of the sixteenth century. The company turned to wine making in the 1960s and in 1974 built a winery in the mountain village of Embonas where it vinifies grapes grown on the slopes of Rhodes’s highest mountain, Attavyros. Emery focuses on the native grapes, Athiri among the whites and Amorgiano, the local version of Mandilaria among the reds. A clutch of recent awards at Brussels and Thessaloniki confirms Emery’s preeminence in this field; the Athiri is among the best expressions of this grape that we have tasted.
