Dodecanese

Dodecanese (“twelve islands”) is the name of the group of islands at the south east corner of the Aegean. The most important for wine is the largest, Rhodes, which has produced wine since antiquity; visitors to museums all over the Mediterranean will have seen the ubiquitous Rhodian amphorae in which the wine was carried and classicists will recall the literary references to its excellence. Pindar’s choice of an exuberant vinous simile for the opening of the Seventh Olympian in honour of the Rhodian Diagoras is unlikely to have been accidental. Today Rhodes is often imagined abroad just as a place for beach holidays. This belies its mountainous interior which provides ideal (and phylloxera-free) growing conditions for wine at altitudes which are cooled by northerly sea winds in summer. The principal grapes are Athiri among the whites and Mandilaria (known locally as Amorgiano) among the reds. Our Rhodian producer is Emery.

Wine TypeEmery Athiri 2004
This wine (of which 30,000 bottles were produced) is from a single vineyard of 2.8 hectares located near Embonas at an altitude of 750-800 metres with a north west orientation. The vines are 15-18 years old and planted on stony ground with light clay. A classic but gentle method of vinification has been followed resulting in a delicate, fresh wine. There are notes of pear, honey and lime, excellent acidity and a quite distinctive minerality.
