The Mercouri estate, which lies on alluvial and clay soil by the western coast of the Peloponnese near ancient Olympia, was first planted in the 1860s with Refosco. The estate was revived in the 1980s by the Kanelakopoulos brothers, who are descended from the founder. Apart from the spectacular reds based on Refosco and the local Mavrodaphne which are grown on the original vineyard, other wines are produced from high altitude (450 metres) vineyards at Milies and Foloi inland.

‘Cava’ is the term indicating according to the Greek appellation rulesthat a wine of such a type has been aged for at least three years: this one has been aged in cask for three and has enormous depth and a luscious aftertaste. The small proportion of Mavrodaphne (the basis of the great sweet wines of the northern Peloponnese) darkens and sweetens this chocolatey, toffeeish, viscous wine.
The wine was named Best Old World Red by Steven Spurrier in the March 2006 issue of Decanter.

The Antares is a blend of Avgoustiatis (‘August-ripening’, a varietal which originates in the nearby Ionian islands) with Mourvèdre and this characterful wine has an explosive nose and layers of full, ripe fruit in the mouth.

This spectacular, sweet red wine is a blend of sundried Mavrodaphne and a small amount of Corinthian currants. Rich yet utterly pure, powerful yet perfectly balanced it reveals layer after layer of complex flavours and runs exactly poised to a long and smooth finish. While an excellent accompaniment to puddings or Roquefort or foie gras, this noble wine is best contemplated alone. Its production is tiny and each bottle is numbered with only three digits. The variations in the character of each vintage are remarkable. The 1997 is one of the greatest so far, grand and for so luscious a wine even austere
