VOYATZI (Macedonia, Greece)

Yiannis Voyatzis is among the most respected oenologists in Greece. As chief oenologist he oversees wine making at Boutari, the second largest Greek wine company. But he also has time for his own estate which he runs with his brother by their ancestral village of Velvendos in southern Macedonia. The vineyard is just over 3 ha at an elevation of 360m on the right bank of Macedonia’s largest river, the Aliakmon, which at that point widens to form Lake Polyphytos. About 1 ha is planted with Xinomavro from a local clone with distinctive properties. Among this and the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Malvasia Aromatica, Voyatzis has found room for a number of local varietals such as Tsapournakos which he uses in his estate red.
